Okay, I know; most of us get tired of cleaning and keeping the house up day after day. If you have kids or pets, it’s even worse. Most days, it feels like I’m taking one step forward and two steps back.

I saw a saying once that said, ” Cleaning the house with kids around is like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos.” Well, I have three kids, a dog, and two cats, so it’s more like sweeping your front porch in the middle of a sandstorm! I battle hair accessories, glitter, crumbs, dog hair, and toothpaste in the sink every day.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I dreamed of taking care of the kids, cleaning the house, and cooking meals for my family. I still enjoy it and wouldn’t change it for anything, but there are days when I have to remind myself why I do it—and intentionally focus on how to enjoy homemaking, even in the little tasks. Finding joy in the routine is what helps me stay grounded and grateful.

Here are some ways I find joy in being a homemaker—and how I remind myself how to enjoy homemaking, even on the harder days:

Buy some special cleaners. Usually, I use Lysol Disinfecting Wipes or something similar. Still, when I’m feeling burnt out on housework, I break out the “special” cleaner—something that smells especially good. For me, it’s anything Mrs. Meyer’s. It seems to make a tedious task a little more enjoyable. They have some amazing scents to choose from, like Bluebell, Lemon Verbena, Lavender, and Lilac.

Move things around. I’m not saying you have to move all your furniture, but if you want to—go for it! Some days, when I’m dusting, I change up where my picture frames, candles, and other decorations are. It makes things feel fresh and helps me reconnect with how to enjoy homemaking creatively. You can find great inspiration on Pinterest or Instagram. I’m personally a fan of the farmhouse style. This book is full of ideas!

Browse Pinterest. When I visit Pinterest and browse through housekeeping posts, pictures of other people’s homes, and cleaning tips, I feel motivated. I set a goal to make my kitchen or bathroom look like the one in the picture. This small act sparks new ideas and reminds me how to enjoy homemaking in a visual, inspiring way.

Put some music on. In our house, even when I’m cleaning, we play kids’ music. It’s a double win: my kids have a dance party and stay entertained while I get some work done. For a great selection, try Spotify or Amazon Music.

Take a day to do something different. Skip the usual chores and do something new. Some days, I spend my time putting away random odds and ends just to eliminate clutter. On others, I reorganize drawers or sort through hair and skincare items. Changing things up helps break the monotony and reminds me how to enjoy homemaking by staying flexible and creative.

Turn cleaning into a game. Set a timer for 10 to 15 minutes and challenge yourself to see how much you can get done. It turns cleaning into a fun, energizing sprint rather than a never-ending task. Try using chore apps or printable checklists for that extra boost of motivation and accomplishment.

Dress for the role. Wearing a cute apron or cozy house clothes can totally shift your mindset. Putting effort into your appearance—even just at home—can make you feel more productive and help you embrace how to enjoy homemaking with intention and pride.

Try a new recipe. I’m terrible about this. I tend to stick with the same ten meals. But whenever I try something new, it makes homemaking feel more exciting—and my family is usually thrilled. I find most of my recipes on Pinterest, but sometimes I’ll pull out a real cookbook, which instantly makes me feel more like a “real” homemaker.

Light a candle or diffuse some oils. A better-smelling home instantly makes me want to clean more. With pets around, my house often smells like dog or cat, no matter how much I scrub. Lighting a candle or diffusing oils helps refresh the space—and me.

Romanticize the everyday. Imagine yourself in a cozy cottage or a dreamy movie montage as you go through your tasks. Embrace the gentle rhythm of slow living, where even simple things like folding laundry, brewing tea, or wiping counters become beautiful when done with care.

Start your chores early. I’ve found that getting started first thing in the morning works best for me. I’m most energetic early in the day, and a clean home by midmorning sets a peaceful tone for the rest of the day. This is a great example of how to enjoy homemaking by working with your natural energy patterns.

Decorate while you clean. Rearranging a shelf, switching out throw pillows, or hanging new art while tidying makes the process feel more creative and less like a chore. Treat it like styling your space, not just cleaning it.

Infuse meaning. Connect with tradition by cooking a family recipe, sewing by hand, or tending to your garden. Let everyday tasks be creative acts—fold towels with the care of a spa, arrange a shelf like a still life, or plate your dinner beautifully. Most of all, practice gratitude. This mindset shift is at the heart of how to enjoy homemaking in a deeper, more fulfilling way.

Do what works for you. These are the little things that help me when I’m feeling unmotivated. I try to focus on creating a home, not just cleaning one. Writing this post has inspired me to de-clutter my kitchen—so off I go!
